Ecclesia et Libertas

Church, Freedom, and the Legal Order

Ecclesia et Libertas is an interdisciplinary initiative developed by Dr. Daniel Fodorean and integrated within the Leader Formation Institute. It is dedicated to educating and supporting churches and leaders in church law and religious freedom, as well as promoting a better understanding of religious freedom in society. The initiative is being developed in partnership with the Baptist Theological Institute of Bucharest, which contributes particularly to its academic and research dimensions.

The Latin expression Ecclesia et Libertas“The Church and Freedom” — reflects a concern for the framework of freedom in which the church affirms its identity, exercises its autonomy, organizes its life, and fulfills its mission. The initiative therefore stands at the intersection of theology, church law, constitutional law, religious freedom, and the relationship between church, state, and society.

01

The Origin of the Initiative

Ecclesia et Libertas developed progressively from the ecclesial, legal, and academic experience of Dr. Daniel Fodorean. His involvement in representing churches and defending their religious freedom continued through legal studies, the teaching of church law, research, publications, and legal consulting in ecclesial settings. Since 2024, this concern has been deepened through doctoral research on religious freedom from the perspective of constitutional law.

02

Why Ecclesia et Libertas?

Contemporary legal, social, and cultural transformations raise significant challenges concerning religious freedom, church autonomy, confessional education, the presence of religion in the public square, and the relationship of religious communities to state law.

This context creates a twofold need: legal education for churches and leaders, so they may understand their rights, responsibilities, and the legal framework in which they serve, and education of society regarding religious freedom, in order to cultivate respect for freedom of faith and conscience.
